2nd Grade Teacher Earns Grant

2nd Grade teacher, Mrs. Laura Huggins, earned a $2,000 grant from Voya Unsung Hero's. Each year, 100 educators are selected to receive $2,000 to help fund their innovative class projects.

The Unsung Heroes Awards Program is administered by Scholarship Management Services, a division of Scholarship America. Scholarship Management Services is the nation's largest designer and manager of scholarship and tuition reimbursement programs for corporations, foundations, associations and individuals.

The grant will be used to fund a project for all of the 2nd graders integrating social studies into the reading curriculum. The students will create a product and go through all of the steps of an entrepreneur. Supply and demand, advertising, an assembly line, opportunity cost and much more will be woven into reading and writing. The students will also learn how to write persuasive pieces. Afterwards, the students will get a chance to try to "sell" their product and compare with other groups why their product did well and what they could have changed. Real life opportunities will take place right in the classroom for the 2nd graders.
